TL;DR: We do not allow the usage of AI-generated content on Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-Net nor the scraping of user-generated content for AI training.

The Following is Not Allowed on CGHMN

  • Knowingly deploying fully or partially AI-generated code to machines on the network
  • Knowingly sharing fully or partially AI-generated media (e.g. images, videos, music, text) on the network or on this wiki
  • Scraping content on the network for usage in AI training
  • Recommending generative AI tools to other community members for solving problems on the network, on this wiki or in the Discord.

The Following is Technically Allowed Due to Licensing Reasons but Heavily Discouraged

  • Scraping content from this wiki for usage in AI training, so long as the resulting LLM output is also licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. While we cannot legally stop this from happening as far as we know, we do not want anyone to do this. (this may change depending on legal developments, and we are not lawyers, this is not legal advice)

For the Purpose of This Policy, What is AI?

We define AI as anything which uses machine learning. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Large Language Models
  • Image Generation Models
  • Video Generation Models
  • Sound/Music Generation Models
  • Automatic Subtitles/Captions

Slop refers to the content generated by these models.

A software project is considered vibecoded when it is fully or mostly composed of AI-generated code.

AI does not refer to for example, bots in video games, which typically do not run on machine learning, but rather predefined behavior trees.

Alternatives to AI

  • Paying a developer or artist if possible. Everyone's financial situation is different but supporting artists is encouraged.
  • Learning to make programs and/or art. There are lots of books and free resources on this.
  • Using stock images, such as that which can be found on Pexels[clearnet], or for space images, NASA[clearnet] provides a wide selection of photographs they've taken which are public domain. There are also archives such as GIFCities[clearnet] for if you need animated GIFs for your site.

Why This Policy?

The Sanctity of Art

We firmly believe that art can only exist when it is created by being with emotion and conscious thought, something which AI systems lack. Since CGHMN is partially a collaborative art project, we give preference to real art.

Code is art just as much so as other forms of art and so this reason applies to it too.

Your Brain

Studies[clearnet] have been conducted[clearnet] which demonstrate the negative effects usage of AI tools has on its users' learning abilities.

Your Privacy

AI tools violate your privacy and the privacy of our users, as most AI companies have privacy policies which grant them wide sweeping privileges to take any data you feed into them and use it for training their models.

Your Mental Health

AI has caused quite a few developers and others mental health issues. One notable example is when an AI agent published a hitpiece[clearnet] on a volunteer maintainer who closed its slop PR.

Your Job

AI is already being used to justify taking away people's jobs[clearnet, paywalled], and we do not want to contribute to the decline in well-being of working-class people.

The Planet

The usage of AI has actively contributed to failures for companies such as Microsoft to meet their own climate goals[clearnet].

War (What is it good for?)

Various governments, such as those of the United States[clearnet], the State of Israel[clearnet], Russia and Ukraine[clearnet], France[clearnet], China[clearnet] and various others are currently using AI tooling in military applications, including targeting in bombings. In addition, they are also using AI for producing propaganda[clearnet]. Due to how these models are trained on incoming data, it is likely that any data sent to cloud-based LLMs such as ChatGPT or Claude will eventually end up part of a model which is used for military systems.
